Wife and Mistress

with one comment

In the dark twisted world of microblog love affairs, Plurk is the wife and Twitter, the mistress!

by Shannah Pace At first, the wife and I had a wonderful relationship. We talked everyday, sometimes many times a day. We have our private jokes and we giggled at our special codes that only we understand. Our conversations are at once torried and passionate! I swear, we could see into each other’s souls!

Twitter was the trashy mistress, promiscuous and tempting. The kind that you don’t bring home to mom, because she’d read in the tabloids all the awful stuff Twitter can do and has done. Who knows if that really WAS a photoshopped image and not really Twitter caught red-handed?

Alas, this happy story has a sad ending. After a tumultuous November ‘08, Plurk left me drained and burned. Since no kids are involved, the strings are looser. I find myself coming home later and later! Then one day, I stopped coming home at all! No amount of chocolate brownies could take away the ugliness that I had seen bared on Plurk…

Oh, where to find comfort?

That temptress Twitter! She beckons me with promises of shallow relationships and 140-character quickies. No commitments. No drama. It’s gonna be fun, Twitter said, plus, I got more APIs than Plurk will ever offer you.

For weeks, I fell into Twitter’s arms, tweets and all. Just when I was about to remember a microblog platform I once so loved, Twitter jumped me and hooked me in! What with #motrinmoms! #magpie (hate!)! twittgroups! twitwall! twitblogs! cli.gs! and budURL!… Just when I thought I was getting out, I get sucked back in!

Over the holidays, I felt a bit of guilt. I went home, rang the doorbell. Plurk welcomed me with open arms and a home cooked meal on the table.

I wrapped myself in the warm blankie that Plurk made for me. Before I finished the whipped cream from the hot chocolate, I find myself daydreaming about…

…Twitter and her APIs.

I began to wonder.

Why can’t I have my Plurk and Tweet it too?

  1. Hi Jane,

I enjoyed your humorous writing and hope that you have made peace with yourself over the two services. Totally understand your struggle between the two microblogging websites. I find that my social networks in the 2 microblogging services are different, so in a way, it’s like being part of different social networks and you just have to “maintain” your networks just like you maintain any other network on Facebook or in Nings.

    Warm regards,
    Elizabeth
